The last few outings I had been doing well on the flounder, and since my confidence was high on this particular area, and decided to take the Ole buggy whip. I have only had a fly rod for a about a year, and have neglected to use it . I have taken it along with me on occasion but I usually end up ditching for my conventional. On this particular trip I told myself I was gonna stick with it. I threw the fly for a extended period of time, with no success, and while doing so noticed that my fly just wasn't getting to the bottom, and as we know that's where the flounder are. I continued to wait for the slack tide (slower moving water) and wouldn't you know" BAM "fish on!!! Those of you who fly fish know that it's a different fight on the fly and has definitely fueled my fire for saltwater fly fishing.
This time of year a host of many many many boaters and a few kayakers too can be found fishing the murky depths of the Elizabeth river, for it's winter trout fishery. On this particular day, I decided to join them. I started my day on the river trolling various swim baits in all colors, only to find a few short striper.

After bailing a couple of striper, and not much luck with the trout,I figured I would change to a swimming hard bait. I had previously seen some bait jumping around , and that was the closest bait that I had that matched it. I continued to troll these areas of bait till my rod had nearly been flung out of it's holder. " FISH ON "after a short fight I landed this purdy trout

I knew that with cooling temps, the fall feed, and some quality intel, that my chances would pretty good. I approached my first couple docks with no success, but I pushed on, hopping from dock to dock till I found some activity. Generally, I look for the ones that have surface activity i.e.. fish popping, fleeing bait etc. I also have found that for me the docks near the deeper water, and faster current seem to hold more striper. I like to keep my yak into the current, cast up current, and just let my lure drift back with the current like a normal baitfish presentation, just outside of the shadow of the light line. This particular evening I was using a Bass Assassin paddle tail on a 3/16 once weighted hook, but as most of you know when there feeding you can just about throw anything. As October comes to a close the striper bite will only get better thru November and December so go get LIMITED-OUT
This particular friday mid-morning trip to the salt started off a bit slooooow. There were plenty of fish being seen on the flats, but none were wiling to play with our offerings. I had told the wife to work this dock while I tried a nearby rock point. I was on my third cast when I heard behind me, "Honey I got a nice one, " it's really pulling. I paddled over to find out that she had pulled up a purdy pup aka. redfish. This was her first redfish ever, and also her PB fish from the yak. She was really excited to finally catch something other than a croaker or spot.

Soon after the wife's release of her red, I slowly creeped back to the spot where she had fished to see if there were any others around that wanted to play. I soon heard a, NO SIR MISTER, GET OUT OF MY SPOT!!! I turned, and looked at the misses, smiled, and said sorry, thats just the fisherman in me LOL. Needless to say there were no more to be had at that spot. I decided to work the nearby grass flat near the channel edge, and that seemed to be where they were holding. The surface of the water was hectic with baitfish and the reds weren't far behind them. I was working weedless 4/O 1/8th ounce jig heads paired with Saltwater assassin paddle tails.

The following day me and the wife had volunteered to work a Heroes on the Water event in Smithfield. I have been doing some video work for HOW, and had recently completed a video project for them from past outings http://vimeo.com/72968462 so this time I volunteered to shoot some pictures for them, to showcase the days events. In the mean time while waiting for the vet to show up, we had some free time to kill, so what better way to spend it then fishing. Tom Vanderheiden the HOW chapter director brought along his fly rod and was doing a little bream fishing. I purchased a fly rod back in january myself but had yet to catch a fish with one yet, partly because I snapped the rod during rigging one day due to a nasty high stick LOL. Anyway after observing Tom catch a couple bream, I asked him if he'd mind if I gave it a whirl. My first couple cast yielded a snag in the surrounding brush, and a few ugly cast. I soon got the hang of it (sorta) and began to work a small trout fly near some underwater brush. I could see the little guys interest in the fly soon as it hit the water. A few short twitches later BOOM, fish on, a palm size bream. these little guys were small, but fun on the fly. This was my first ever fish on the fly and hopefully not my last. The rest of the day yielded a few more bream and time well spent with a wonderful organization like HOW

What do I mean by this? Well it was time to take part in a wonderful local and national organization, known as" HOW," Hero's on the Water. This non-profit organization helps our wounded military veterans that have suffered from many medical ailments, as well as psychological ones, such as PTSD. HOW helps heal these veterans in a small way by getting them into the great sport of Kayak fishing. Getting them out of the confines of there homes, and out on the water, with others that may suffer from similar problems. Soon after hearing about this organization, I thought, man this would be a great thing to be a part of, especially being from a family who has had several family members in the service. After several failed attempts over the looming months due to a hectic work schedule, I had not been able to make it to a HOW event. One afternoon I had arranged to pick up a HOW shirt as a gift for my father in law from Tom Vanderheiden the local Director of the Tidewater HOW chapter, as we began to talk, I told Tom that I really wanted to be more involved in the chapter but due to my schedule and all, It just never seemed to work out, Tom suggested, "Well, what do think about doing a video for the chapter? Better yet, a video about Kendall Wallingford and his story and involvement in HOW . Kendall is a disabled vet who now gives back to his brothers in service thru the same organization that once helped him. I told Tom I would be honored to do a film on Kendall and HOW. The not yet titled film will be a artistic, heartfelt view into Kendall's story, and HOW, in hopes we can get other vets out to this great organization. Please stay tuned to our Facebook Page, Yaktastic Adventures for more updates, and a official movie trailer as I get rolling in the coming weeks. These days and times it's not to hard to get wrapped up in your cellphone, or your Facebook, or even your favorite reality tv show. Don't get me wrong, I love keeping up with friends and family on Facebook, and watching Duck Dynasty, but sometimes it's just nice too shut the phone off, load up the yaks and camping gear, and head to the great outdoors.. We loaded up on a Thursday morning and headed to Lanexa VA. to Ed Allen's campground for a little R&R, and of coarse some feeshin too. This trip was pretty cool, I had the chance to introduce a lot of family and friends to the sport we all know and LOVE "Kayak fishing"I'm sure there were many that had thought, I wonder what all the fuss is about, after seeing all my pictures and posts on Facebook. I will tell you it didn't take long for them come around, they were all smiling ear to ear. It occurred to me this weekend, especially after seeing the joy and excitement on there faces, that it's important to share your passion for something with others in hopes they will do the same, so it forever prospers. This weekend there were many fish caught, many campfire stories told, and many memories made. I put together a short video of the weekends experience that I'd like to share with you all as well!! Hope you enjoy!! Don't forget to check me and Rob Devore out over at YAKTASTIC ADVENTURES on Facebook. CLICK THE LINK BELOW to view video
As the Mother Natures switches gears the infamous BLUEFISH have arrived in the local inlets here in VB, and for us in-shore anglers it's a sign of the change of seasons, from winter to spring. This time of year can be pretty fun for all anglers, intermediate to the advanced anglers, these blues hit just about anything you throw, and put up a pretty good fight, if you are fortunate enough to nab a bigger blue, also known as CHOPPER blue, then you have a real fight on your hands, for sure. over my past few trips out I was lucky enough to nab a few of these choppers, with one of them being my personal best 35" just a inch shy of a citation here in VA waters. The last few trips have been productive with blues, trout, flounder and a few slot reds mixed in as well. I hope to make it over to the eastern shore Va. in the coming weeks to try my luck for the GIANT REDS that are swimming the shoals, since they evaded me the first go round..
My plan of attack for this tourney was to target spawning bass on there beds, ie. the big females. I made my way in and around the shallows only to find a few unoccupied beds and a few angry dink bass. As the day worn on and the sun got high, I switched up my approach to the matted vegetation throwing a 1/4 to 1/2 ounce texas syle rigged Sinkos and worms, and that seemed to be the ticket for me, although the fish were not of much size, I was at least catching enough to put me on the board. I did in fact hook up with a couple quality fish doing this, only to lose them in the struggles of fishing in this thick matted vegetation, but I still managed to squeak out a 2nd place finish in the tourney with the few dinks I did manage to get to the boat, so all in all it wasn't so bad after all....
The weather was cold, the water was warm, and the Bite was HOT!!!! I decided to launch at Chesapeake Yachts on Thursday afternoon, and give it a shot. The weather was calling for evening temps in the 30's, and winds from NW 10-15 with a chance of flurries.I know some will say, what the hell you doin fishing in those conditions?? Well I have found that the colder the better when it comes to fishin the ER,especially the Hot Ditch, not just because the discharge is usually running, but there was absolutely NO ONE out on the water, and if you fish this area in the winter, that's a rare site. I managed to catch most of my trout on 1/4 lead and paddle tail saltwater assassins, slowww rolling over drop-offs and ledges near these warmer water temps of the ditch. I managed 20 or so trout to 23inches and some really cold feet by the end of the nite, man I can't wait to get out of these waders, and into some shorts!!!! SPRING IS ALMOST HERE
For the Presidents Day BOONDOGGLE that is, in Merritt island Fla. for a long weekend of socializing, feeeshing, and just a plain ole good time.I arrived friday morning to a already busy campground full of boondogglers eager to get the festivities underway. As many asked what's on the agenda for the Boondoggle, well that's the beauty of it, there is no itinerary,no schedule, with the exception of a dinner on saturday night ,which also host raffles and giveaways, just a chance to fish and hang out with like minded people, and have a good time. That's what a Boondoggle is.

Me being from Virginia this was a chance to fish a fabulous fishery in conditions that i'm not use too, going from fishing murky deeper waters with heavier fishing tackle, to fishing gin clear shallow water with lighter tackle. there was a bit of a learning curve for sure, but I was able to figure out a few fish with the help of some of the locals pointing me in the right direction. I encourage everyone to make plans for future Boondoggles, they are held on Columbus day weekend, and Presidents Day weekend, so pack up the wife, and kids, lets BOONDOGGLE
2012 that is, It's hard to believe it has come and gone.with a new year here it got me thinking, what would be some goals I'd like to achieve in 2013? Well the #1 thing in my book is learning to fly fish. I have always wanted to give that a try and, this year is the year. As for other goals for the year,I'd like to spend more time on the water, and also explore new areas to fish. The last thing on my 2013 list is to be even more thankful for the opportunities that mother nature blesses us with. let's hope next year will be even better than the last but until then, I'm gonna leave a few images from the last couple months of plunders on he water. Happy New Year

I decided to hit the inlet the past few days to try and find a few of these critters, and it didn't take long however this time was different . I made cast after cast at fish that I knew were in the area and was only rewarded with a few short strikes,as I grew frustrated at them, I had told myself I'll try another spot as I made my way to that spot I deployed two lines out and trolled. After a few short minutes BAM I quickly grab the rod as the other one slams down as well. After I haul them in,I thought to myself, I might be on to something. I fished the rest of the evening trolling and ended up with 12 or so trout to 22 inches and dozen or better puppy drum up to 18 inches, this just goes to show you it pays to try different things to trigger the bite. I guess in this case there was just something about the speed and presentation of the lures as I drug them behind the yak that got them going. I also learned another lesson while I was loading up to leave..... DON'T FORGET YOUR FISH apparently I somehow left my stringer at the dock with my more than still lively fish on there LOL!! I returned to the dock with my headlights on facing the water to see if they were still there, and what did I see? my fish swimming away from me. I darted into the cold water and snagged them just in time. I could only imagine someone hooking into one of them and pull up a stringer of fish.
A Boondoggle is a chance for kayak anglers to get together in a location for a weekend and FISH,Socialize,Drink, and Eat. Think of it like a family reunion, except everyone shares the same passion for this great sport as you do.

The boondoggle started for some of us on Thursday evening, at the Ocean View pier. Here I met some of the regions finest anglers, Kayak kevin, Mark Lozier, Jay brooks, and even Lee Williams. I am sure if the fish under that pier knew who was up above those thin wood planks they'd surely head for deeper water. I also met Rob Devore aka A Bad Backcast, Mark Watanabe,Mark Wheeler, and many others. What a great way to kick off the Boondoggle.

The following morning we fished the around the 64th street launch at first landing State park. The fishing was less than stellar, but a few managed a couple fish. It was still nice to fish among like minded people. That evening I made a run for some Striper at the Hrbt with Rob Choi, I personally didn't get any but I think Rob had got one. I did manage to nab a ton of gray trout and a 19in. flounder That was later used in the Guyataku seminar.

Saturday started the Boondoggle officially for most people reason being, we had people travel great lengths to attend the event, and many arrived Friday evening. On this day also was the Mini Rod tourney. Grab your Spider Man and Sponge Bob reels Me, I opted for the the Optimus Prime combo, I thought was a sure winner, but my 16in Red I caught on it would fall short to a Ribbon fish that measured 32in caught by Allie Brooks, Jay Brooks wife CONGRATS.

Later that evening we all met for a dinner at Salty C's on Shore Drive. Here we had a great dinner and plenty of drinks, along with a huge raffle that supported the local Heroes on The Water Chapter. In which we raised over a thousand dollars for. After a awesome dinner and raffle, we all headed back to DDolsen's cabin for a Guyataku fish rubbing seminar held by non other than Rob Choi . This is a very cool concept that the Japanese did to document there catches when they didn't have cameras . Rob had learned this art from his mother a few years ago and was nice enough to share it with us all. Thanks Rob

Sunday was a bit of a rain out for the most part, a front had moved in and the temps had dropped into the 50's the night before, but a few managed to get out and have there way with the fish. As the evening wore on I had got a call From Mark Watanabe about a impromptu pot luck dinner, and sort of a ceremonial closing to the Boondoggle. So all in all, was the fishing insanely good? No, but the new friends I've gained is better than any good day of fishing. If you haven't been to a Booondoggle ,please join us for the next one in Florida, Kars park Feb 15-18 you won't be disappointed
This is my favorite time of the year here in Virginia, with the water temps dropping the fish start to feed up for there winter migration.

I decided to give Lynnhaven a shot, since I had a few hours to burn. I started the day in search for the drum on the flats, and was quickly rewarded . After catching numerous pups up to 17in. I make another cast to a dock near a channel, and get a solid hit, after a few short reel peeling runs, to my surprise up came a juvenile Black Drum. I'm always excited to see these juvenile fish ,because it shows that the fishery is thriving, soon after my surprise catch, I made my cool evening paddle back to the dock ,thinking about the upcoming Fall festivities striper, tog, and specks Ohhhhhhh Myyyyyyy
On this particular day, I decided to switch things up a bit. The forecast was calling for heavy winds, and rough seas, so I moved inland to the sweet water. The body of water I fished today is in Suffolk, off of pitch kettle road, and goes by the name Lake cahoon. The area offers two fisheries, that are split by a dam one side cahoon lake, and the other lake meade. I have fished them both with similar success, but others will beg to differ on which is the better hole to fish.

I started the day off early throwing top water, with little to no success. As the day progressed I started to throw soft plastics in and around lay downs, and that seemed to be the ticket. I managed several bass, a few bream, and a BASTARD of a Bowfin that gave me pure hell. I hooked this guy earlier in the day, and he spit the hook,so as I made my way back to this stump on my way in, he nailed my bait for the second time ,and it was on. This guy ripped drag on many runs, before submitting to my Boga grip.I got him up long enough to weigh him,(5#) and then he went "Ape Shit"he turned so violently he tore his bottom lip off ,before hitting the deck of the yak, and then in the drink he went. I soon after ended my day on the sweet water, not a bad day for a last second plan B trip.

The illustrious "Sciaenops Ocellatus"AKA red fish. They are here in pretty good numbers and they are HUNGRY.

This is much different from recent years, they were almost mythical, with only a few mentions of a few here and there. If you ask many of the local fisherman why this is?You get a couple different theories, like harsh winters, and over harvest from commercial netters, but who knows the true answer. All I know is they seem to be on the incline, and I hope as recreational anglers we can find what reasoning was behind the decline in the local population of Red fish. With that being said grab some jig heads , some paddle tails, and enjoy the bite. Here are a couple pics of others that wanted to play as well.

As I awake from a dreary half awakened sleep, due to the anticipation of catching GIANT sheepshead at the CBBT I jumped up , crab a cup of joe ,and headed to the tackle shop, only to find they were slap out of fiddlers. :-( I did manage to buy some frozen ones there, even though they are less than favorable,I made due. I arrived at the launch before sunrise to what looked like it was gonna be a Beaut of a day.

I worked many pilings, at various depths and only managed critters for the most part. At one point I got a little excited yelling" Hell Yeah'' I finally got me a nice one, after doing the piling shuffle, up out of the water came a BIG OLE UGLY TOAD...... Bummer. The rest of the day I managed lots of sea bass, pig fish, and toads.Although I didn't get any Giant fish, I enjoyed The scenery and running into fellow yakkers on the water, nice to meet you Chuck Wrenn .

The following day I decided to head over to the HRBT, and try my luck for the flounder, and whatever else would bite. I arrived at the tunnel span about 7am to find good moving clear water. I thought these might would be good conditions, and on my second cast I snagged a 16 in. flounder. SAWEET!! I continued to work the piles with only a speck to show, so I made a move and immediately found myself bailing reds, even though they were on the small side, they were still fun. I ended my day catching a few decent Flounder and a crazy looking Ribbon fish as well,All in all a great day on the water.

The last few days or so I ventured to Rudee Inlet and Lynnhaven Inlet to try my luck at some flattie's and I was rewarded, with a few keepers, in the 18-20in range. The bite was pretty good both days with fairly clear water. The bait of choice was GULPS on 1/4 ounce lead heads.
This is where my love for the outdoors started at a very young age, my Grandfather had me and my cousins in the fields hunting, and on the water fishing. It's funny how we all get so wrapped up in expensive rods and reels and the best lines available, when all my Grandfather use to use was a old cane pole, and a tube of live crickets. I guess the old saying "Less is more" couldn't be more true in this instance.

I met up with my cousin Saturday morning, who is also fairly new to the kayak fishing scene. he just purchased a Jackson Coosa ,and was looking to put it to work, so off we went.on this day we hit a local reservoir that we had never fished and that definitely showed , cause we were only able to manage a few blow ups in the lillie's,but all in all it was a nice day for a paddle and some conversation among ourselves.

On Sunday we decided to hit a local pond that we had heard some fish stories about. This pond looked like a fishy place, until further inspection. The pond had cypress tree's ,lily pad's, and a lot of GRASS. The grass made it difficult to fish, so I decided to stand in the yak to get a better view of the pockets within the grass, to make a cast. I have recently been paddling around in the standing position , but have yet to really fish while doing so. I thought what the hell, I'll give it a shot,I jumped up and made a cast to a open pocket in the grass, and BAM! he nailed It,pulling drag running left, then right, a few short seconds later got him next to the boat and lipped him on in. As I let him go, I thought to myself damn instincts must have taken over, because I never even thought once that I was in the standing position.I tell you what, that was one hell of a experience, and I loved every second of It. The rest of the afternoon was slow , but the time spent enjoying the outdoors with family , much like we did back with my Grandfather, this will go down as a one of my better days of fishing.
This past week me and me wife Christinia headed to our home away from home, the OBX. We had a 4 day stay there ,and I thought this would be the perfect time to let her try this yaking thing, I've been so addicted too here lately.I rented her wilderness tarpon to try, and she absolutely loved it ,although I think we'll look for something more fishing oriented than touring yak for her.It didn't take her long to say I can see why you love this so much,It's so peaceful and serene out here. When I heard that I instantly knew I was screwed from here on out... just kidding :-) I encourage everyone to take there better halves out on the yak.
I managed a couple flounder and that was about it. I also had decided to bring my dslr camera and snap a few pics of the surroundings in OBX.
I purchased some editing software and tried my best to come up with something, definitely not a easy task. I envy the Kayak Kevin's and Rob Choi's of the world for putting together great work on film that motivates me to learn the craft. So put on your ears, bob your head, and enjoy

The last few times I have targeted Flounder I have caught a few decent keepers and returned them to swim another day, but after mutterings of that reaching back to my father in law who loves fresh flounder, I decided to bring him a few. As i started my paddle I took a look around and thought to myself these days are truly numbered, the summer season is almost upon us . While there will be plenty of bikini's to enjoy with that comes lots of boat traffic, which can be nerve racking for us fishing in our plastic vessels.

I started my day off with a nice 25-30in. blue, that snapped my line as I tried to swing him over the yak(Bummer)but I got to experience a beautiful fight between us. I then bottom bounced jig heads and gulp in and around various structure, in the inlet. The bite today started out a little slow, but persistence pays off . I ended the day with 12 Flounder total 5 of which were keepers and a few croakers too
Today I managed to get off a little early, so I decided to wet a hook. I had thought about hitting Lynnhaven, but after hearing rumblings of a stale bite recently, I opted to head to Rudee. I launched shortly before 4pm and quickly found that I was one of the only one's there, except the seal fleet. As I kept looking at the dark end clouds I was beginning to second guess my decision, but NO Thunder NO problem, so i threw on my GULP, and went to work. I spent about four hours on the water today, and managed around ten flounder up to 20in .three croaker, one speck and a spot. I was fishing the slack into the outgoing tide. All fish were caught on Pogy gulp on 1/4 jig heads.rlee48http://www.blogger.com/profile/18445058914574684275noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3557202814771955629.post-12251471094313205562012-05-09T19:07:00.002-07:002012-05-10T17:56:47.244-07:00Flounderin Around

<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: large;">Today 5/7/12 I hit one of my favorite little holes called Rudee Inlet. I frequent this place for a number of reasons #1 It's close to home.#2 Launching is free and convenient. #3 You can start fishing within 100 yrds of ramp. #4 You can target a number of different specie's as well. That being said these little perks are one's that make it a desired location for me.

<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: large;"> On this particular day I was targeting (Flounder). They can be found around structure , creek inlets, and ambush points. While flounder are predator fish, they lay and wait in these places for bait to swim by, relying on there natural camo to stay stealthy.<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: large;">Today I was using white pogy gulp minnow's, on 1/4 ounce non painted jig head's. I like to make long cast, and bottom bounce the jig. I prefer to use a med/hvy action rod with a fast tip, paired with 30 # braid and, a 15-20# flouro leader.<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;"> I ended up with 8 flounder, 3 of which were 18 inch range, and the others were in the 14-16 inch range. I also managed a few blues, and a couple small speckled trout, definitely not a bad way to spend a afternoon after work.rlee48http://www.blogger.com/profile/18445058914574684275noreply@blogger.com1
